Speaking of Obasan, what will come up to your mind? Curly hair, small floral print blouse, and a fake Channel?   Be careful, don't look down on them.  They are the key players of home economy.  Even TV stations have to produce prime time dramas to entertain them.  They are powerful and incredible, therefore we all need to learn their philosophy of  life-- it's Obasan Spirit.  

Have you met Obasans in the department store annual sale? Their determination to win must make you feel inferior. They’re as tough as a football player.  Once they determine to get the sale item, they will absolutely rush and grasp it like a football, with all their strength, no turning back. You will never defeat them mentally and physically.

My mother is a super Obasan. Sometimes I don’t understand why my mother can be so think-skinned. She can fumble around and check all the fruits on the booth regardless the vendor’s impatient eyes. When she takes the elevator, she push the escalator bottom by her umbrella very natuarally. I asked her, “Mom, don’t do that. Don’t you feel embarrassed?” She answered, “I’m not doing bad things. Why should I feel embarrassed?”    My mother spoke in self-confidence, as if it’s the only truth in the universe.  No wonder Obasan is the most powerful creatures on the earth.  

Though I don’t want to admit, day by day, little by little, I’m stepping into the world of Obasan. But every Obasan was once a shy little girl. How come I’m becoming who I am now?

Two years ago, whenever I went to traditional market, I was like “a rabbit lost in forest.” I was cheated very often. Guess how much for this apple?  It cost me NTD 200!  I know it's just a normal apple.  I know it's not golden apple or  Steven Job's apple.  I know you think I'm stupid.  These bad experiences forced me to become an Obasan. Now I know how to survive in traditional market, that is “Never dress like a woman” “Speak in Taiwanese” “Don’t say yes too soon.”  

After becoming an Obasan, I find my skills are polished in all aspect. For example, I always had a headache about math permutation(數學排列組合) in high school. But now I can perform it very well. When I buy a clothes, the 1st thing popping up on my mind is: Can its value be optimize? Can it have muti-function? It would be the best buy if it could be a work clothes, sportswear, and sleeping night gown at the same time! From this point of view, maybe Obasan is the most fashion group. Because every fashion magazine like NONO, always teach us “How to use 3 single items to create 10 different looks”

Obasan is nothing to do with your age. It’s a philosophy of life. It’s an attitude that “I’ve experienced to deliver a baby. So what else should I feel afraid? ” (老娘孩子都生過了，還有甚麼好怕的?) Therefore Obasan is strong, powerful, and shameless. It’s like a caterpillar to butterfly process. I love the woman I'm becoming, the woman I am, and the girl I left behind.  If I still looked a little bit nervous now, it’s because part of me is still a girl and have not transformed to a 100% Obasan.
