Have you ever thought what do you want your epitath to say when you die? If I was good for nothing, I deserve such line below “here lies a dead person.” When I am dead, I hope it may be said, “Here lies a good mother, a good friend, and an excellent wife. Her life has been extended through her offspring. She is indeed needed for someone’s life.”
Are you needed by someone? Or you always get needs from others? I used to be a person who wanted so much from others. As a lover, I needed love, like “how can I live without you!”; as a wife, I needed sense of security. “How can I live without your salary!” However, after my son was born, my point of view was changed. I changed my role from a taker to a giver. Though, being a giver is never an easy job, I have to hynopsis myself that my babe’s booboo smells so good like curry rice; his crying is so enjoyable like classic music! It’s indeed the biggest lie in the world. Frankly speaking, sometimes I still miss the wonderful life of being single, for I could sleep all day long and go anywhere without two Mr. Changs!
My previous job was a marketer. Every time my mother asks me “What do you do in your work?” I always replies, “I produce a big amount of junk e-mails and flyers which you don’t want to receive and throw it away … ” After these years, I started to ask myself “is my job meaningful for this world?” Actually, people hate advertising, but it costs a lot of social resources. You can just estimate how much we’ve spent in this presidential election. Sometimes, I even think this world would be better if I produce less advertising. I’m keeping wanting from this world, but I have no fulfillment feeling. I wonder, “Am I really needed by this world?”
After my son was born, I found it’s more blessed to give than to take. I gain much greater fulfillment feeling. It’s nothing compared to a tiffany, a feast, or an Europe trip!I know I have a more meaningful reason to live in this world—my kid needs me.
There’s Maslow's hierarchy of needs. In this chart, he mentions human being has all kinds of needs, including physiological need, safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The higher hierarchy we are, the greater fulfillment we would get. Before, I lived in this stage- self-esteen. I work hard for higher salary to prove my value. I wear make-up for gaining good reputation “hey sunny you’re beautiful.” You can say I live for myself. But now, I live in self-actualization. I try to live for others.
Have you ever thought how many people need you on this Earth? For me, at least my parents need me; my first child Rich Chang needs me; my future four children need me. Besides, I think my husband may need me, or he cannot have other four children. Though I’m not Mother Terresa, I am Mother Sunny at least.
There’re so many people who need us, why don’t we cherish them? Therefore, don’t complain our children are too clingy! Don’t complain our parents are too nagging. Remember, don't close yourself off. You should love others first, and then others will love you. The power of giving will change yourself. Toastmaster of the evening.
